Sheffield Green City Award

Green Flag award

Sheffield has once again maintained its status as one of the UK's Greenest Cities. Ranking higher than any other area in the Yorkshire and Humber regions.

What is a Green Flag Award?
Green Flag Award® applications are judged against eight key criteria. Where certain criteria are not met, applicants can provide justifications that may be taken into account. What's more, if management practice changes are in progress but not yet fully implemented, transitional phases will be acknowledged and viewed positively.

The judging criteria also considers the fact that each park/green space will offer different kinds of facilities, and will be managed and developed to varying opportunities and constraints. Innovation and the way facilities offered are tailored to the needs of the community will also be taken into account.

Eight key criteria

1. A welcoming place

2. Healthy, safe and secure

3. Clean and well maintained

4. Sustainability

5. Conservation and heritage

6. Community involvement

7. Marketing

8. Management

Will King Speaker at MADE Festival for Entrepreneurs Sheffield

Will King

Founder of King of Shaves

Will King is the founder of shaving company King of Shaves. He was made redundant in the early nineties from his job with the marketing agency Fountainhead Communications and had always experienced problems with shaving. In 1992 he created a shaving oil product that eased the pain, rash and burn he experience during shaving.

King approached Harrods, the London department store, and secured the personal agreement of owner Mohamed Al-Fayed to stock the new product. He then hand-filled 9,600 bottles in his kitchen, using a "gunk pump" given to him by a friend in the yacht business.

The King of Shaves brand has overtaken Wilkinson Sword and Nivea to become number two to Gillette in the shaving prep market in the UK, and the products are also taking off in the US.

Tramlines Sheffield – The Free For All Music Festival

Image

Tramlines sprung into life in 2009, bringing together a bunch of disparate promoters and disparate ideas. 65,000 people filled Sheffield city centre to what felt like bursting point. Music seeped from every available performance space and a sense of goodwill descended like a mist on the city. Crime rates even fell on the weekend.

By Sunday night, we knew that Sheffield would demand a return in 2010.

A year on, the festival came back, and more than doubled in size. Saturday’s attendance mushroomed from 35,000 to 65,000, redefining our definition of bursting point. In total, over the weekend Sheffield welcomed 105,000 visitors. As the festival grew, so did the performance spaces. The New Music Stage parked its wagons on Barkers Pool, 30 venues became 50 and the Blues and Ale Trail and the Tramlines Buskers Bus had their first outings.

Meanwhile, Toddla T’s showcase dance night moved from DQ to the 1,600 capacity Octagon – but still saw four-hour queues on the night!

In 2011 the event grew again, as 80,000 festival-goers hit town on Saturday and total attendances grew to 155,000. New spaces continued to crop up to cater for the growing crowds. 50 venues became 70, a Folk Forest took root at Endcliffe Park, gipsy-punk lit up Heeley City Farm and our new headline sponsor Nokia joined us in building an Unannounced Tent on the top of Fargate. The Buskers Buses doubled servicing the new Blues and Ale Stage on its second circuit.

A Best Metropolitan Festival gong at this year’s UK Festival Awards confirmed our arrival.

Play and Party Centre Sheffield

At 'Forward For Kids' we recognise that keeping children active plays a key role in their physical development and well being. With this in mind we have developed a fun and exciting environment that will encourage activity levels but also stimulate development in other areas of learning.

Keeping children happy...

The play equipment is seperated into age appropriate areas to encourage physical movement for all ages. This includes sliding, crawling, balancing, swinging, hand eye co-ordination, ball skills and lots more. Children will have opportunities to make new friends, share and take turns when playing. This will also develop their understanding of cause and effect as they explore the play equipment and use it in different ways.

Keep adults happy...

A quality, clean, welcoming environment offering great food from snacks to larger meals as well as a selection of hot and cold drinks. The seating area also has a good line of sight to allow parents to interact with their children or relax knowing their children are safe because they can see them play.

Quality of design...

Our play equipment has been designed and manufactured to the latest highest standard BS8409:2002 by the UK's leading manufacturer of indoor play equipment, House Of Play Limited.

race for life

What is Race for Life?

The Race for Life story

Race for Life is the UK’s biggest fight against cancer and the largest women-only fundraising event in the UK. Since Race for Life started in 1994, an incredible six millions participants have raised over £457million, more than any other UK event series raising money to fund cancer research.

Some of our Race for Life women take part in celebration of surviving a cancer experience. Others take part in memory of a loved one or to give hope to a cancer-free future. But all of you share a common goal: to raise money for Cancer Research UK's groundbreaking work and to help save more lives.

Race Big

On the day

Race for Life events are full of amazing moments. Each event brings hundreds of women together and it's also a great day for you and your family and friends to enjoy together.

What you’ll need at your Race for Life event:

On the day of your event, you need to bring a few things with you:
  • Your back sign and running number that you received in your Race for Life pack.
  • Comfy shoes and sports bra for walking, jogging or running.
  • Safety pins – so you can attach your running number and back sign to your top.
  • A bottle of water so you can stay hydrated.
  • Sunscreen and a hat – make sure you are SunSmart and protect yourself from sunburn.
  • Bring your Donation Station bag, or any bag, full of your quality unwanted items.
  • And your friends and family to cheer you on!
Fancy Dress
Wearing fancy dress or adding some accessories to your Race for Life outfit is totally up to you – but we think it's a great way to make the day extra special. Many women wear fairy wings, feather boas, deely boppers and tutus. Make a night in of it and organise a get together before your event to plan or design your outfits with friends and family.

race for life fancy dress

Arrival – one hour before start

This gives you plenty of time to soak up the atmosphere and to do any last minute preparations such as pinning on your back sign or putting finishing touches to your outfit.

There’s no need to check-in on the day – just make your way towards the stage area where there will be music to get all the participants and supporters in the mood.

This is the perfect opportunity to drop off any quality items you no longer want at the Donation Station marquee at your event, which we can then sell in your local Cancer Research UK shops.

Welcome from the Race for Life team – 30 minutes before start

Your Race for Life event organiser welcomes you and shares information about the groundbreaking work that Cancer Research UK do, and explains why your support is vital.

Warm-up – 20 minutes before start

You can take part in a light aerobic warm-up with all the other participants to get those muscles ready for your event.

Take your places – 10 minutes before start

You make your way to the walkers or runners flags, depending on whether you want to walk, jog or run the course.

Start time

The starting signal goes and you're off with friends and family gathered round to cheer you on.

Celebration – after your event

Once you’ve crossed the finish line, you will receive a Race for Life medal and a goody bag as a thank-you for taking part from one of our volunteers.

Renishaw Hall and Gardens...The Gardens

 The Gardens

Renishaw is rightly celebrated for the fabulous Italianate gardens. The formal garden was laid out in 1895 by Sir George Sitwell (1860-1943) in the classical Italianate style. Lady Sitwell and the late Sir Reresby restored much of the garden and enhanced the geometric design.

On either side of the formal gardens are more naturalistic plantings and to the east of the garden, holly and camellia avenues lead to paths through mature woodland, down to the lakes originally excavated to enhance the view from the house.

The National Collection of Yuccas at Renishaw Hall

Trevor Key began collecting Yuccas in 1979, his first plant purchased in rather humble surroundings from Tesco Supermarket. 33 years on this plant, now 12 feet tall, has to be regularly pruned to stop it creating strain on the glass roof of the Yuccary.

Throughout the 80’s and 90’s Trevor developed the collection by sourcing rare seeds from throughout the America’s and grew them with his original plant in the greenhouses at Renishaw.

In 1999 the derelict orangery at Renishaw was restored and has now become the permanent home to the National Collection of Yuccas, which now contains more than 40 species and cultivars.

Sculpture

The garden was laid out by Sir George Sitwell from 1886-1889 and he populated it with statues acquired on his many tours of Italy and this collection has been added to by his son Sir Osbert and Sir Reresby and Lady Sitwell.

The two most important statues acquired by Sir George are those of Diana and Neptune, said to be the work of Caligari, friend and contemporary of Tiepolo (1696 –1770). They are placed in the centre of the garden at the southern edge of the Middle Lawn. They do not face the Hall but gaze out of the garden, drawing the eye to the views of nature beyond.

Lorraine Botterill who has provided Renishaw Hall with her beautiful lion and sheep sculptures, among others currently residing in the Children’s Garden, is opening an exhibition of her latest work on the 1st July this year. Lorraine creates her masterpieces through chainsaws of various sizes and she will be demonstrating her skill throughout the day as well as explaining the creative process which goes into producing such beautiful pieces.

Lorraine’s exhibition will run from the 1st July – 30th September 2012.

RSPCA Sheffield

RSPCA Sheffield

About RSPCA Sheffield

The RSPCA Sheffield Branch operates independently of the National RSPCA which is based in Horsham, Sussex. We are COMPLETELY self funding ie. are not funded by the National Society, the government or our local authority. The Sheffield branch of the RSPCA is run by volunteer trustees. The Branch, when fully operational, can cost over £1500 PER DAY to run. This money has to be raised locally by staff and volunteers through fund raising, donations and legacies.
The Branch is made up of:
  • an Animal Centre which rehomes unwanted, neglected and abandoned cats and dogs. We neuter, vaccinate and microchip every dog and cat which comes to the Centre and all cats are tested for Feline Immunodeficiency Virus (feline AIDS) and Feline Leukaemia Virus.
we NEVER put an animal to sleep unless it has proved to be aggressive or on veterinary advice
  • A Welfare Clinic which offers reduced-rate vaccinations, flea/worm treatments and microchipping. Our operating theatre is now set up and we are able to offer a neutering service subject to qualification - please call us for more information
  • A charity shop, situated at Crookes, selling second-hand goods such as clothing, bric-a-brac and books for only £1 per item.
Dangerous Dogs Act 1991 has failed.. Yet, after 21 years of the RSPCA having to deal with the mess that the Dangerous Dogs Act has left us in, the government today announced a flimsy package of measures to target irresponsible dog ownership, which fall way short of tackling the ever escalating problem.
Despite years of working with policy makers  to help them to understand the issues that we, along with the police, local authorities and other animal charities have to deal with on the frontline, we seem to have been completely ignored.

While we welcome the proposed extension of the laws to cover attacks on private property, this is a mere drop in the ocean. The government has wasted this opportunity to make meaningful policies  in the fight against irresponsible dog ownership, and with our animal centres filled to bursting with abandoned and abused dogs, we simply can’t wait another 20 years.

Even at their strongest, the proposals for micro-chipping which will be open to (yet another) public consultation, “compulsory micro-chipping for all dogs” will fall short of really addressing the issues and demonstrates  that the Government have failed to grasp the complexities of this issue.

Micro-chipping alone is not enough

Many of the abandoned animals we see already have microchips, but inadequate and out of date records mean owners are unreachable or can simply claim that they ‘gave the dog away years ago’ (This was pointed out to Secretary of State, Caroline Spellman when she visited our Harmsworth Animal Hospital, but it seems to have fallen on deaf ears). The RSPCA is calling for the reintroduction of a mandatory dog registration system to run alongside compulsory microchipping, but it is vital that owners details be centrally held in an up to date  Government run database if it is to be effective.
Dog registration would go a huge way to improving the lives of millions of dogs and  holding the irresponsible owners to account for acts of cruelty or neglect.
After 20 years of having to deal with the reality of failing dog control laws which fails to hold cruel and irresponsible owners accountable for their actions, frankly, we’ve had enough.
Dogs who have irresponsible owners are very often victims of cruelty and neglect themselves. To encourage them to be aggressive, dogs may suffer violence at the hands of their owners. The RSPCA has seen dogs with broken bones, animals covered in burns and even dogs attacked with glass bottles. The number of abandonments, particularly of large bull breed dogs, has increased so much that RSPCA rescues are crammed to bursting.

Urgent action is needed!

Dog owners need to be held accountable for their actions, which includes taking responsibility for their dogs behaviour and training. Current legislation is failing to tackle the problem of irresponsible dog ownership and since the introduction of The Dangerous Dogs Act in 1991, the situation has been getting progressively worse for both people and animals.
How the legislation needs to change:

  • Most dog attacks happen in the home, but current legislation does not cover private property, so many irresponsible owners are not held accountable for attacks.
  • Emphasis on prevention by education and engagement.
  • Compulsory microchipping and dog registration is vital but details must be held in a centrally held government database which is kept up to date if it is to be effective.
  • A comprehensive approach to tackle irresponsible dog ownership that prevents serious incidents from occurring rather than waiting for them to happen before action can be taken
  • Measures to improve dog welfare – especially for those that are seized as part of investigations
  • The abolition or phasing out of Breed Specific Legislation

 How can I help?

Millions of dogs continue to suffer due to government’s failure to take meaningful action on this issue. Imagine how many more dogs will suffer if we have to wait another 20 years for a revision of the law!
