Sheftival: Loads More Acts Announced...

20 more artistes, local bands and club brands have been added to the bill at Sheftival, South Yorkshire’s biggest ever festival of music, culture and sport, timed to celebrate the Olympics on 4th and 5th August at the Don Valley Complex.

Sheftival spans a 25 acre site with a unique mixture of music, sport, civic pride, food, drink and entertainment.  Seven stages, over 1,000 performers, 20 sports associations, three markets, twelve bars, and a giant bungee are just scratching the surface of what’s on offer.  It will be a great day out for all and day tickets cost from as little as £10 – what a bargain!

New artistes announced this week include a showcase of Sheffield’s finest musicians on the Busker’s Barge.  Acts booked to entertain passengers on board the floating stage - which will make regular trips from the Jetty at Don Valley Bowl - include The Payroll Union, Sheffield's biggest Americana band with songs about whisky, murder and the birth of a nation; Sheffield super group the Early Cartographers, and former Pink
Grease bassist Stuart Faulkner who’ll perform surrealist comedy covers.

Singer songwriter Nat Johnson, formerly of Monkey Swallows The Universe, will entertain with her folk leanings; and post rock and indie pop act Cats For Peru – whose sound has been compared to greats like Elbow and Arcade Fire - will also be on board plus many more.

Furthering the eclectic music on offer is the Monkey Bump Dance tent - a brand new concept presenting the best and most exciting Sheffield dance promoters plus some out of town headliners to compliment.
Highlights include dubstep forefather and repeated winner of dubstep forum’s Best DJ, Youngsta, of Rinse FM and Fwd fame. On the Saturday he’ll be joined by local label R8 Records with DJ Autograff (Tramlines’ People’s Choice Winner). There’s techno on offer from psychedelic crew, Planet Zogg, plus Sheffield free party specialists, Sheffield Techno Institute (STI).

Sunday sees Dub Café artists Arie and Rubiconman perform, the former who’s remixed for Alicia Keys, and Off Me Nut Records jungle and dnb crew Phatworld, whose rave inspired madness has seen them play repeat performances at Glade Festival and Glastonbury. House and breaks lovers will pleased with Sunday’s headliner (still to be announced) booked by club brand Collect who’ve been ramming out new underground club DLS for the past year.

Sheftival will also serve up real Jamaican flavour at the Jamaican Jerk Barbecue with Isus 2K Sound System in the leafy green Sundial area. Isus 2k, one of Sheffield's finest sound systems, are bringing their kit and stacks of large speakers and amplifiers to get the party jumping.
Saturday will combine music with stories told, poetry recited, young dancers showing off their steps, and some really fine singers, revealing the diversity of Jamaican music styles, all served up with a good dollop of reggae.

Sunday’s style is 'Skamania' - the music that launched a thousand tunes. Expect to hear everything from the Skatalites The Guns of Navarone, Millie's My Boy Lollipop, and Desmond Decker's Israelites, to the sounds of ska inspired bands of the 1980s such as The Specials, Bad Manners, and The Beat. This isn't just for grown-ups, ska will get the children jumping and smiling too, it's that kind of music. And don't forget the jerk chicken!

With an A-list pop line-up programme by festival partners Real Radio still to be announced, an Olympics viewing zone in Don Valley Stadium supported by BBC Radio Sheffield, lively arts and crafts in the Sharrow Family Village, and so many sports activities to have-a-go at, could Sheftival be the reason why us Britons will decide to holiday at home this summer?
