From Monday August 13th 2012, Sheffield's bin collection will be fortnightly.
The
Government are making cuts to the council's budget and they are faced
with a £170 million gap over the next four years. The introduction of
alternate weekly collections will allow Sheffield City Council to save
at least £2.5 million per year.
Moving
to alternate week collections will mean that the black bin for
non-recyclable waste will be emptied on one week and the blue bin and
blue box for recycling emptied the following week. To help Sheffield
residents to manage the changes, an improvement to the recycling service
is also being introduced, with all residents in the city being able to
choose which recycling container (blue bin or blue box) to use for their
glass bottles, plastic bottles and cans and which to use for their
paper and card.
All
other areas in South Yorkshire and around 60% of Councils across
England and Wales successfully operate alternate weekly collections.
Residents living in large households or where a resident has a medical
condition that produces lots of waste can apply for an additional/larger
black bin. Further support will be provided through house visits which
will be taking place over the next few weeks in certain areas of the
city to support the changeover and to explain the support available
including advice on larger bin applications.
58%
of residents who responded to consultation stated that their black bins
were half full or less each week. And a majority of people who
commented on bins in the recent budget consultation said they were in
favor of the Council reducing the number of black bin collections.
Leaflets will be dropping through residents’ letterboxes this month giving details about the changes.
Councillor
Jack Scott, Sheffield City Council’s Cabinet Member for Environment,
Recycling and Streetscene, said: “The fact is that we have been left
with a massive budget gap because of this Government's cuts. If savings
are not found in the waste budget, other services would have to be cut
even further to fill the gap.
“Making this change in Sheffield means we can protect other services. We are determined to make sure we support Sheffield people in adapting to this change.”
Residents
should continue to use the black bin and recycling services as normal
until they receive an information pack about alternate week collections.
Many households will have a change of collection day for both their
black bin and recycling collections and the new collection dates will
be provided as part of the information pack.
How will the new service work?
The
introduction of alternate week collections will mean that on one week
you will have your black bin emptied and on the following week you will
have your blue bin and blue box emptied.
Week One Week Two
As
part of the changes, we will be making an improvement to the recycling
service so that everyone will have the option to choose how they use
their blue bin and blue box. For those that don't already have this
option, this will mean that you can choose which container you use for
your glass bottles and jars, plastic bottles and cans and which one you
use for your paper and card.
